Year 4

Fox and Otter classes

Welcome to Year 4

Children in Year 4 love getting stuck into our engaging history, science and geography themes and are motivated by the new skills and knowledge they acquire. Our curriculum is not only exciting but provides many opportunities for challenge.

Our curriculum is driven by our high-quality texts including Pugs of the Frozen North by Philip Reeve, Queen of Darkness by Tony Bradman, Max and the Millions by Ross Montgomery and Varjak Paw by SF Said. Our themes include States of Matter, The Romans, Natural Disasters, Animals including Humans and Ancient Greece.

Alongside this curriculum, the children receive weekly outdoor learning, Computing, JIGSAW (PSHE), French and PE sessions. Throughout the year, they are also taught Design & Technology and Art inspired by our themes.

As a school, we are committed to celebrating inclusion and diversity throughout the year: we celebrate Black History Month, Disability History Month, Safer Internet Day, Children’s Mental Health Week and British Science Week to name a few! In Year 4, we have sensitive and age-appropriate discussions during these celebrations to ensure that our children are understanding, accepting and empathetic towards all people.

In Year 4, there is a statutory Multiplication Tables Check in June. To prepare for this, children practise their times tables daily through chanting and then complete a set number of questions independently.

Our main expectation for Year 4 is that children try their best and have fun and enjoy themselves. We require children to demonstrate our LEARN values at every opportunity. We celebrate ‘Marvellous Mistakes’ and encourage children to be increasingly independent.
